The Really Good Pot Roast - Christmas Dinner

On the last night of Hanukkah (Chanukah, Chakakhan, Chewbacca), we decided to post a track off our new Holiday EP, A Really Good Holiday! The EP will be released on Tuesday December 18th featuring 5 new recordings from RGPR, including this track, and a special song co-written by Dr. Cranquis and the Cranquistadors!

This song seemed appropriate for tonight.  It’s a song about growing up as a Jewish kid in the 70’s and 80’s, when Christmas day meant stores were closed, TV only showed repeats and a loop of It’s a Wonderful Life, and all of your friends got awesome toys while you just sat at home, bored.  Until we went out for dinner to the only place in town that was open.

Happy Holidays from your friends in The Really Good Pot Roast.

Come back on Tuesday for A Really Good Holiday, featuring the Twelve Days of Cranqmas!

The Red Light is on…

Ladies and Gents, we’re recording.

We’ve talked about Cranqmas, and that’s happening.  What’s Cranq-mas, you ask?  Why, it’s only the 12 Day, Non-Denominational, MultiCultural, All-Inclusive, Non-Judgemental Tumblr Winter Holiday Season Enjoyment Period! We’re actively laying down the music now. We still need you help with the lyrics!  Send your gift idea in official “12 Days” format (5 golden rings, 2 turtle doves…) to the Really Good Ask Box.  You can submit an entire list, or just ideas for individual days.

This has also spurred us to write some new RGPR-styled holiday music.  We might have some new music soon.

In the meantime, send us your medical-themed Cranqmas ideas!

Tumblorchestra, ASSEMBLE!

The 12 Days of Cranq-mas

As previously mentioned, The Really Good Pot Roast and Dr. Cranquis have decided that our next great musical collaboration will celebrate the holiday season Tumblr style!  By writing the first Cranq-mas Carol.

What’s Cranq-mas, you ask?  Why, it’s only the 12 Day, Non-Denominational, MultiCultural, All-Inclusive, Non-Judgemental Tumblr Winter Holiday Season Enjoyment Period!

The band is going to write “The 12 Days of Cranq-mas” Carol.  But we’re looking for the help of all the Cranquistadors and Roastheads (Roasters? Really Good Fans?) out there in Tumblr Land.

What do you think should be the 12 gifts of Cranq-mas?  We’re trying to keep it medically themed (It is CRANQ-mas), but in a way that is accessible to both medical and non-medical folks.

Just submit your gift idea in official “12 Days” format (5 golden rings, 2 turtle doves…) to the Really Good Ask Box.  You can submit an entire list, or just ideas for individual days.  Best gift ideas will be revealed when the song is completed.  If your idea is used in the song you will receive credit (Link to your blog in the song lyrics on the final post).  Anonymous submissions are also accepted.

Let’s get Cranq-ing!

Sunday Musings with Mark

  • My showcase show is a week away!  Come see me play live! November 3rd @7pm, Music Cafe in Damascus, MD.

  • “Rehearsing Songs” is a somewhat new and strange concept to me.  Years and years (and years) ago, I was in a band, and we largely covered Top 40 songs.  In the years since, I’ve written and recorded a lot of music, but the idea of playing them live was abstract to me.  Hell, I titled my first solo album ‘icantplaythislive’. I’ve written, recorded, and moved on.  Now I’m going back and learningmy own songs.  Strange days, these.

  • Speaking of which, I have my setlist narrowed down.  It’s largely solo stuff, but I do have a Pot Roast song in there.  Trouble is, a lot of our band stuff really needs at least 2 guitars to work, or I need a lot more practice to pull off.  Now I’m trying to work on how to ‘banter’ betwixt my odd songs.

  • Cranq-mas!  Rx-Mas is coming!  Rob and I are already planning “The 12 Days of Cranq-mas” Carol.  We’ve received some great ideas, but we could use more!  What do you think should be the 12 gifts of Cranq-mas?  Just submit your gift idea in official “12 Days” format (5 golden rings, 2 turtle doves…) to the Really Good Ask Box.  You can submit an entire list, or just ideas for individual days.

Happy Sunday!

Cranq-Mas: Welcome to the Holiday Season, Tumblr Style!

MumbledGripes

Hello.  Have you met Dr. Cranquis?

With almost ten thousand followers, statistically speaking that was a rhetorical question.  If you are that person who hasn’t, go now and read.

Dr. Cranquis is quickly approaching that 10,000 follower milestone, and we’re helping him celebrate.  Today we’re giving you the first part of our not-so-secret-anymore super-secret-project we’ve mentioned recently.

We’ve written Dr. Cranquis a theme song.

In a similar vein to his televised alter ego’s theme, Mumbled Gripes is an instrumental drums-forward trip-hop rock track.

Mumbled Gripes will be on our new album You Have Died of Dysentery, which will be released via Bandcamp this week. You’ll be able to download it in whatever format you’d like, at whatever price you’d like (including free).

-RGPR

PS - There is another part to the Dr. Cranquis 10,000th Follower Spectacular in the pipeline, but you’ll just have to wait and see.

Somebody pinch me, cuz I’m having this dream where total strangers compose music for my internet alter-ego. WHAT?!?!

But long-time readers will recall, I’ve been promising you a little something special when this blog hits 10,000 followers for quite a while now. And thanks to the music-making duo The Really Good Pot Roast, that “something” is gonna be pretty “special”… although possibly a bit late for the 10K mark. Stay tuned! Meanwhile, go check out the rest of RGPR’s musical stylings on their Tumblr. :)

I’m reblogging this song because it has now officially gotten radio play.

‘Mumbled Gripes’, the song Dr. Cranquis commissioned as part of his 10,000 follower milestone, was played on the April 22nd edition of ‘No Pidgeonholes’ hosted by Don Campau.

Mumbled Gripes was released on our You Have Died of Dysentery instrumental album in December.  You can find it on our Bandcamp page.

If you’re looking for us, we’ll be doing a happy dance.

New Thing  Art, Take 2.
Based on feedback, I’ve revised the art for ‘New Thing’
Made the ‘New Thing’ font less fonty (thanks palmtreepalmtree!)
Changed the text to be the actual lyrics to the title song (per Cranquis’ suggestion)
Opted not to use the post-it note art (thanks almost everyone, specifically Rob and Errol of Debs and Errol)
Thoughts?  Anyone want to submit better art?

See You Next Tuesday (NSFW)

by

The Tumblorchestra, Featuring The Really Good Pot Roast, Texnessa, Dr Cranquis, and TLOTH.

The challenge began with an innocuous suggestion by helms-deep that we could start a band here on Tumblr.  We saw that as a gauntlet thrown.  So we called, and a few brave tumblrs answered.

Texnessa and her favorite word were the first to arrive, and completely dictated the song direction of the song.  Dr. Cranquis sent along his sections, and they fit perfectly in our odd little minds.  TLoTH brought it home with some harmonies.

We got your submissions and we wrote and recorded piecemeal over the last week or so.

And now we present to you, “See You Next Tuesday”, the NSFW Tumblorchestra first single.

  • Texnessa: Vocals, Cowbell
  • Cranquis: Vocals, Clapping / shaker, Kazoo solo
  • TLOTH: Vocals
  • RGPR: Backing music, Vocals, Additional lyrics

Lyrics:

“See You Next Tuesday”

The way you move
It draws me in
For you I’d find my faith just so that I could sin
Don’t know your name
But that’s okay
Everything I need is all in how you say

Texnessa / TLOTH / Dr. Cranquis

Yes indeed
Got you in mind
As I’m praying on my knees for a sign
I hear your voice
Calling out to me
Point me in the right direction and suddenly I see (your)

Texnessa / TLOTH / Dr. Cranquis

Somewhere among
the truth and lies
Lives your crusade against love’s compromise
Give you what you want
Tell me what you need
I’ll see you next Tuesday, and every day between (in your)

Texnessa / TLOTH / Dr. Cranquis

Tumblorchestra: It’s coming…

We’re on the tail end of the disaster we call a Writing/Recording/Mixing process.

Tumblorchestra… it’s coming.

See you next Tuesday…  or sooner.

Tumblorchestra, Assemble…?

Mmmkay.  So far, we’ve received snippets from Texnessa and Dr. Cranquis.  Both sets of submissions are awesome, and we’re dying to work with them. We could build songs around either, but there’s a common thread between them.

Helms-deep?

PalmtreePalmtree?

TLOTH?

Anybody?

Record or send the following:

  1. 5 words: Any 5.
  2. Hand Claps: Clap 4 times.  We’ll take care of the rest.  Try and clap at 120bpm.  If you don’t know what I just said, just clap slowly and we’ll cut and paste until you sound like a boss.
  3. Expletives!  Record your self shouting “Fuck you”, “shitsnacks”, “Whorefist”, or the expletive of your choice (you could combine #1 & #3)
  4. Some instrument:  Anything you want.  Atonal humming, cowbell, guitar, flute, violin, yelling.  We’ll cut and edit to fit.  Try to keep at 120bpm, or at least a consistent tempo that we can timeshift, if needed.
  5. Lyrics:  You write it, we’ll sing it.  Think Anchorman.  (I’m Ron Burgundy?)

If you need recording software, Audacity is a great, free, recording application.

If you want to do an instrument solo, let us know, and we’ll work on music and send you a section to record your part to, as well as key and tempo.

If we don’t get anything else, we’ll run with what we have, and will start writing/recording this week.

Something will come of this, somehow.
