The Really Good Pot Roast - Jolene (Dolly Parton Cover)

QUESTION:  What does a band do after just finishing recording and mixing an album?

ANSWER:  Record a cover of Jolene in 24 hours.

Much like Mark’s cover of ‘…Hit Me Baby One More Time’, this track just kind of snuck up on us, and we ran with it.  Let me take you through the last 24 hours of this recording’s short life:

- - -

Tuesday, 8:30pm - Text Exchange
ROB: For some reason I started recording a cover of Jolene.
MARK: Yes. Yes. Do it.  That might have to go on the blog.
MARK: Please do it.
ROB: Let’s see what happens with it.  I might tag you in for backing and fills and such.
MARK: Okay.  I’m excited by this.

Tuesday, 8:50pm - Text Exchange
ROB: I sent you what I accomplished tonight.
MARK: I got it.  I’ll download it tonight and play around.

Wednesday, 12:30am - Email
MARK: Okay, so I put some work in here. […]  If you wanted to go Mumford and Sons on this, I missed it completely, and we can just scrap this.  If not, read on.  […detailed rambling of parts recorded…]  She’s a jaunty tune at a spirited 2:30.  The ball is in your court now.

Wednesday, 1:15pm - Text Exchange
ROB:  Listened to Jolene before I left the house.  I like what you did I might add some more guitar fills, but that’s it.
MARK:  Cool.  I’m glad.

Wednesday, 6:45pm-7:45pm - Email
ROB:  […more detailed ramblings of parts recorded, mixing…] Getting the balance on the mix was a bit rough, but I think we’re in a good place now.
MARK:  Awesome.  I’m good with this.  Want to post it?
ROB:  I’m giving you the honor of the post.  I’m not sure I could explain what just happened.  Or why.

What happened here is that we relaxed after recording an album by recording a 70’s punk-esque cover.  Why is because why the hell not?

Mixed Signals, the new album by The Really Good Pot Roast, out on May 19th on Bandcamp.com for pay-what-you-want.

It is a really good thing I am alone right now because the happy dance I am doing might be construed by strangers as a fit. BECAUSE I HAVE A FUCKING THEME SONG PEOPLE.

Courtesy of The Really Good Pot Roast.  You guys are the fucking best.

Back up haters, enjoy the Cuntitude because I took the O out of Cuntry.

Another theme song in the books.  This is about as country as we get, folks.

Congratulations on your recent culinary school graduation.

Theme Songs by The Really Good Pot Roast.  Music for and from Tumblr.
Helms-Deep brought the funk.
Dr. Baffled had his comments on life through the blues.
Texnessa had us take the O out of country.
MMLTD pushed the industrial.
Vanpocalypse brought the metal.
Jules brought out the indie pop in us.
WomanInterrupted summoned our TMBG out with geek rock.
TLoTH reminded us why both she and 80’s synth pop are awesome.
Dr. Cranquis set an electronica mood.
Theme Songs is a collection of 9 theme songs we’ve written for (and with) some of our favorite tumblr bloggers in the last couple of months.  And now, you can download the entire album in whatever file format you want.
Ralph suggested we post the album online for people to download, and we’re doing just that.  You can get the album now for whatever price you want to pay (including free). All proceeds from this album will go directly to the American Red Cross.

See You Next Tuesday (NSFW)

by

The Tumblorchestra, Featuring The Really Good Pot Roast, Texnessa, Dr Cranquis, and TLOTH.

The challenge began with an innocuous suggestion by helms-deep that we could start a band here on Tumblr.  We saw that as a gauntlet thrown.  So we called, and a few brave tumblrs answered.

Texnessa and her favorite word were the first to arrive, and completely dictated the song direction of the song.  Dr. Cranquis sent along his sections, and they fit perfectly in our odd little minds.  TLoTH brought it home with some harmonies.

We got your submissions and we wrote and recorded piecemeal over the last week or so.

And now we present to you, “See You Next Tuesday”, the NSFW Tumblorchestra first single.

  • Texnessa: Vocals, Cowbell
  • Cranquis: Vocals, Clapping / shaker, Kazoo solo
  • TLOTH: Vocals
  • RGPR: Backing music, Vocals, Additional lyrics

Lyrics:

"See You Next Tuesday"

The way you move
It draws me in
For you I’d find my faith just so that I could sin
Don’t know your name
But that’s okay
Everything I need is all in how you say

Texnessa / TLOTH / Dr. Cranquis

Yes indeed
Got you in mind
As I’m praying on my knees for a sign
I hear your voice
Calling out to me
Point me in the right direction and suddenly I see (your)

Texnessa / TLOTH / Dr. Cranquis

Somewhere among
the truth and lies
Lives your crusade against love’s compromise
Give you what you want
Tell me what you need
I’ll see you next Tuesday, and every day between (in your)

Texnessa / TLOTH / Dr. Cranquis

Tumblorchestra: It’s coming…

We’re on the tail end of the disaster we call a Writing/Recording/Mixing process.

Tumblorchestra… it’s coming.

See you next Tuesday…  or sooner.

Tumblorchestra, Assemble…?

Mmmkay.  So far, we’ve received snippets from Texnessa and Dr. Cranquis.  Both sets of submissions are awesome, and we’re dying to work with them. We could build songs around either, but there’s a common thread between them.

Helms-deep?

PalmtreePalmtree?

TLOTH?

Anybody?

Record or send the following:

  1. 5 words: Any 5.
  2. Hand Claps: Clap 4 times.  We’ll take care of the rest.  Try and clap at 120bpm.  If you don’t know what I just said, just clap slowly and we’ll cut and paste until you sound like a boss.
  3. Expletives!  Record your self shouting “Fuck you”, “shitsnacks”, “Whorefist”, or the expletive of your choice (you could combine #1 & #3)
  4. Some instrument:  Anything you want.  Atonal humming, cowbell, guitar, flute, violin, yelling.  We’ll cut and edit to fit.  Try to keep at 120bpm, or at least a consistent tempo that we can timeshift, if needed.
  5. Lyrics:  You write it, we’ll sing it.  Think Anchorman.  (I’m Ron Burgundy?)

If you need recording software, Audacity is a great, free, recording application.

If you want to do an instrument solo, let us know, and we’ll work on music and send you a section to record your part to, as well as key and tempo.

If we don’t get anything else, we’ll run with what we have, and will start writing/recording this week.

Something will come of this, somehow.

Tumblorchestra, Assemble!

Hey!  I just remembered something:

Weren’t we supposed to be doing something?

If I recall, there was a call out there for a Tumblr band camp experience.  We can Captain Planet this thing with your powers combined.  We volunteered to help put the music together.  Time to call people out.

Texnessa: Cowbell?

PalmtreePalmtree: Claps?

Cranquis: ????

Helms-Deep: Tuba/Bass/Marimba/Oboe something something?

If you’re still interested in The great “Tumblr Goes to Band Camp” extravaganza, grab your microphones and record a few things for us:

  1. 5 words: Any 5.  Be creative.
  2. Hand Claps: Clap 4 times.  We’ll take care of the rest.  Try and clap at 120bpm.  If you don’t know what I just said, just clap slowly and we’ll cut and paste until you sound like a boss.

  4. Some instrument:  Anything you want.  Atonal humming, cowbell, guitar, flute, violin, yelling.  We’ll cut and edit to fit.  Try to keep at 120bpm.
  5. Lyrics:  We’ll sing it if you write it.
